Where's Woody Guthrie When You Need Him?

He's being channeled by Bruce Springsteen, that's where. There are many fine versions of this song. I grew up on Joan Baez' version, which has even greater piquancy once you know about her Mexican heritage. I think Bruce does it proud. The song is variously called "Deportee" and "Plane Wreck at Los Gatos." Woody wrote it in 1948 when he was struck by the fact that the victims of a recent plane crash - Mexican farmworkers being returned to Mexico - were left unnamed in media coverage of the disaster. In so many ways, this song could have been written yesterday.
