With reports of famine emerging in Gaza, Benjamin Netanyahu and his regime can claim the dubious distinction of having replicated Nazi atrocities by turning that populous enclave into a latter-day equivalent of the Warsaw ghetto. The achievement is all the more noteworthy for having been accomplished in the name of a nation founded by and for survivors of the original horrors with the intention that never again should such things be repeated. Similar kudos belong to the Trump regime for its unflinching support of Netanyahu in this effort. Whatever twists and turns American policy may take in the future, whatever feeble gestures have been made in the past in the direction of amelioration, until now the main current has run most powerfully in the direction of enablement, despite the ever-inceasing cascade of proof as to what was being enabled. Both Trump and Netanyahu have demonstrated, as if further evidence were needed, the astonishing, almost limitless heights to which humans may rise in exercising our capacity for pointless destruction and cruelty. May history reward this awful triumph of the human spirit by burying its perpetrators along with their victims.
