Why Now?

National Public Radio has been trumpeting for a few days now that the "president" says he is close to signing a peace deal with Iran. How there can be a peace deal with a country he says we are not at war with is not mentioned. It also is puzzling why they keep telling us what he says, when what he says never means anything like what it purports to mean, he lies constantly about everything, and, in short, nothing he says can be taken seriously as a statement describing any sort of reality. What makes another lie from Trump newsworthy?

It does seem likely, however, that some sort of agreement will be reached in the near future to allow Trump to pretend that he has ended the war he claims is already over. It seems likely that any such agreement will constitute a major victory for Iran, with the U.S. having won nothing but the president's ability to walk away from his mess. The big question is, why now? Such a deal has been available almost from the beginning.

NPR didn't ask that question. They seem to have a policy of taking everything emanating from Trump's mouth more or less at face value. So now they present the story as presaging the end result of weeks of diplomatic effort.

But the reality, as usual, is staring us in the face. Trump decided to engineer something that looks like a peace deal the moment the House of Representatives signaled its imminent willingness finally to pass a war powers resolution demanding an end to this particular adventure. Which it did within the past two weeks. At that point, Operation Epstein Fury became a liability, no longer tenable as a distraction from the ongoing coverup of Trump's sexual misdeeds as evidenced in the Epstein files.

A new distraction is needed. And lo and behond! They're teeing up Cuba. And suddenly Greenland is in the news again.

Some day, people in the media will begin to ask themselves why they kept on covering the Trump administration as if it had any policy goals or strategies other than to serve the obvious ones of making Trump and his family and cronies money, persecuting his opponents, and keeping him out of prison.
